Knowledge Economy: Michigan ranks respectably (12th) on sheer number of knowledge economy jobs and establishments. However, the growth of the knowledge economy is not keeping pace with the rest of the country (using the last three years as a measurement). After California and Delaware, Michigan had the smallest growth in knowledge economy establishments, and the state witnessed the largest decrease in knowledge economy employment over the same time period.
Creative Economy: Based on percent change in creative industries establishments between 2008 and 2009, Michigan ranked 7th, with a 14.3 percent increase. Despite the increase in establishments, creative economy employment fell by 4.4 percent over the same time period.
Digital: Michigan ranks quite high on the number of high-speed internet lines, from 11th in 2006 to 10th in 2008. Growth in high-speed lines looks good compared to other states, and the state’s ranking is holding. The two Great Lakes states ranking higher are Illinois and Ohio.
