Michigan shows ever-declining support for higher education. From 2005 to 2008, Michigan’s state and local public higher education support per full-time equivalent (FTE) student fell well below the national average, ranking 42nd in the country by 2008. Inflation-adjusted support for Michigan higher ed has declined every year during that period. 2008 support per FTE in Michigan was $5,310, down 12 percent from the year before. The only Midwest state ranking lower than Michigan was Ohio, at 47th in the nation.
