Michigan saw statistically significant increases in poverty rate between 2006 and 2007, and between 2007 and 2008, according to the American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates. By 2008, Michigan ranked 35th in the nation (number 1 being lowest) with a poverty rate of 14.4 percent. Nearly all of the states ranking below Michigan are located in the south, while no other Great Lakes states have a poverty rate higher than Michigan.
